Joe Biden’s Health Decline
With President Joe Biden’s declining health becoming increasingly evident, both domestically and internationally, there is speculation that he may not complete his term and run for re-election in 2024.
The President’s time away from the Oval Office, including during critical events like the Hawaii fires, coupled with rising inflation and a diminishing global presence, has raised concerns.
Of course, much of this can be attributed to Joe Biden’s age. According to a recent Associated Press poll, nearly 70% of Democrats believe he is too old for another term. Respondents in the poll used words like “slow” and “confused” to describe him, with one Republican even dubbing him “potato.”
For Democratic hopefuls, this signals an opportunity to step forward and prepare for a potential presidential bid.
Who Are the Contenders?
Among the names being discussed are several governors who have garnered national attention in various ways.
These include Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was considered as a potential running mate for Biden in 2020.
While none of these governors have commanded as much attention as Newsom or Florida Governor DeSantis, they have managed to pique the interest of those seeking an alternative to a struggling president.
According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Moore has been active in raising funds for Democratic governors, offered a televised response to the first GOP debate, and attended recent fundraisers in New York’s Hamptons.
Shapiro is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the New Hampshire State Democratic Party’s convention next month.
Other lesser-known state leaders, such as Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, are diligently working to build a national network—a common strategy for future presidential hopefuls.
Despite having a pool of potential replacements for Biden, none have risen to Newsom’s level of prominence, and the president currently faces minimal opposition.
All of these contenders outwardly support Biden, but they are discreetly cultivating a national profile on the side, just in case.
“In the absence of a young and dynamic president, the party needs to introduce new faces and voices,” remarked Nina Smith, a Democratic operative who previously worked for Buttigieg’s presidential campaign. “I believe you’re witnessing the emergence of the next generation of political leadership in this country through the Biden re-election campaign and its surrogates.”
Harris Is Not a Primary Option
The focus on emerging, younger Democratic leaders also indicates the party’s reluctance to forcefully push Kamala Harris into the spotlight. Her consistently low approval ratings cast doubts among donors about her ability to succeed Biden in the White House.
Throughout the summer, polls conducted by Leger, Monmouth University, and Fox News consistently showed the vice president with negative approval ratings.
Despite Harris’s recent efforts to bolster her public image, many remain unconvinced of her ability to lead the nation.
Just as with the Republicans and Trump, the Democratic Party has access to viable alternatives to the current leader who appears to be guiding America down a precarious path. It perplexes me why they do not seriously consider these alternatives.
